I’m really struggling with the features of a toddler’s face. Every time I try to draw my son, it ends up looking like a much older boy.

Damien, I didn’t know you had such talent! I’m just now seeing your drawings. They’re fantastic. I think your boy is looking older b/c the head is tall and the cheeks are narrow. Make the head rounder, cheeks fuller, and you may get that boyish look you’re seeking. Esp. if you keep the body the same size. Just my opinion, but I can’t draw to save my life!!!

Thanks Amy. I kept this hidden for a long time. Most of my friends from college are pretty surprised to see these things.

Damien, When doing a portrait on an adult face the eyes are usually half way between the top of the head and the chin if looking straight on, with a younger child the eyes are a little lower down. This really helps me when I try to capture a young face. I think you did a great job…getting them to stay still is my biggest challenge.

Martha-
Yes, eye placement is definitely part of the problem. I’m trying to strike the balance between the right eye placement without making him look like he has downs syndrome.
My boy never stays still long enough for me to even get a rough sketch. This is a big part of the challenge. Luckily, last night he was exhausted because he had seen fit to consider 3:00 AM his wakeup time. So, that combined with Dora the Explorer and he was in a complete zone.

Hi Damien—
Your post makes me chuckle. Your toddler looks like an older boy…my toddlers look like aliens! Old or young, you’ve presented a very handsome fellow!

Thanks Suzanne, your comment (and blog) makes me chuckle. It will be interesting to look this in a few years and see if it was predictive of how he looks. I suspect it’ll be dead wrong, but it will still be fun to compare.
