My good friend CS pulled together a boy’s night out with a couple of the guys from his neighborhood last night. The plan was to go to this dive called Bella’s for all you can eat crabs.
None of us had ever had crabs there. In the past, I’ve not been impressed with the food. I agreed to go for two reasons, it’s recently changed ownership and has gotten marginally better and they’ve upgraded the beers on tap.
Now, I’m a bit of a crab purist and prefer to have them in someone’s backyard than to go anywhere for them. I also generally don’t like the all you can eat deals for a couple of reasons:
- I’m always suspicious of the quality that I’m signing up for. Crabs are generally expensive, so I’m always leery of a $25 for all you can eat deal.
- All you can eat crabs are generally small, which means more picking and less meat. I’m at the point in my life where I can afford to buy big crabs and have fun picking say 9-12 in 2 hours rather than 25 for a lower cost.
Well, for better or for worse, they weren’t doing all you can eat last night. So we ended up ordering a dozen large. Then another dozen, then another. The crabs were really quite stellar.
So, lesson learned…Not only can you not judge a book by it’s cover, but sometimes the best crabs are at a place that almost no one knows about.
