International HarvesterTwo years ago, I read One Square Inch of Silence by George Hempton. I wrote a rather critical reaction to the book on this blog. One of Hempton’s arguments is that we no longer hear our footsteps when we walk, and he attributes this to the fact that there is too much ambient noise in our environment. When I read this book, there were many things that resonated, and not being able to hear our footsteps was one of them until recently.

I have dealt with painful shoes for over 20 years. The pain started after college. Over the years, I tried everything from store-bought inserts, to wearing Birkenstocks exclusively, to custom orthotics. Nothing eased the pain. My feet were only comfortable when I was barefoot.

Effortless. That’s how it feels when you’re in the zone. Your cadence becomes your tempo and you have no idea that you’re actually cycling, actually burning calories, actually working out.

This is why I ride — For days like today, when the rhythm of the peddle strokes transports me out of my current reality and into a place where I don’t need to answer the phone — a place where my thoughts drift from IP networks and to an open stretch of road in front of me — a place where I feel freed from my everyday life.

Sometimes you just need to slow down and take a few minutes for yourself. That’s exactly what I am doing right now. I am chillin with a little Miles Davis in a comfy chair in my room.

We got this chair shortly after Mr. Grey was born three years ago today. I was a bit of an ass about the chair because I really had no idea what we were in for and thought our existing rocker was fine for nursing the baby. Well, I was really wrong on that score. At any rate we got the chair Nd even though I still think it is UGLY it sure is a nice place to chill.

It has been a long December. With the start of a new job, the holidays, Mr. Grey’s birthday and in-laws on town there has not been much time for moments like this.

It feels good to just be, soaking up the rhythms and melodies of an old jazz master in the darkness of my room.

Once again, I’ve gone silent on this blog.  The reason for the silence is my new project over at graphite and ink.

Charleston, SC - Marsh It’s 7:40 AM.  Sunday.  I’m the only one up.  This hasn’t happened in almost two years.  I’m having coffee with milk and sugar.  I usually have it black but this is a treat!

Could this be a sign of things to come?

Lets hope so.
